Between 'Pizza Fright' and 'After Juliet', these were my first experiences on film sets and learning first-hand how a set works and gaining intimate knowledge with a range of equipment has been highly beneficial and something that I can take with me into my personal and professional career moving forwards. As primarily I prefer to act, write, and direct (in more of a theatre context), I believe it is imperative to understand every aspect of the film set and be accessible to everyone in your crew. It was an absolute joy and I'm excited to continue working on films throughout my career in any capacity.
I joined the crew of 'Pizza Fright' quite later in its production stage but after having already worked on my first film through University, 'After Juliet', I was more than ready and thrilled to be a part of another project, especially one so tonally different.
A quite literally cheesy horror film, my role on set was that of Key Grip, a position that I have come to enjoy quite a lot, gaining intimate knowledge of the sets and equipment needed for any one shot and taking immense pride in how everything eventually comes together in the final edit of the film.
'After Juliet' was the first Uni-lead film that I had the privilege to work on as the Key Grip and Boom Operator. Not only was it my first Uni based film production but my first time working on any film. It was an amazing opportunity that really opened my eyes to all the inner workings of a film set. Especially being in the position of Key Grip more so than that of Boom Operator because it requires an intimate knowledge of all the equipment that you're using and as the shoot was only 6 days, I didn't have long to learn it all, so it was imperative to become familiar as quick as I could to be an actual asset to the team. It was very much a case of being thrown straight into the deep end but I wouldn't have had it any other way, it's the best way to learn and this new knowledge is now an asset.
Becoming familiar with the equipment led to my broader involvement across every department, working closely on the lighting with the Gaffer and then even with the camera crew in operating the camera for some scenes. This was properly highlighted when I was listed as essential crew for an intimate scene wherein I had to operate the camera dolly and clear the set.
Then working as the Boom Operator once again brought on new knowledge and opportunities for myself on the set. This experience for me became more and more about gaining as much knowledge as I could on the inner workings of a film set and how a crew should operate and respect each department. This was highly important to me as when I eventually move further into the industry and are in an above-the-line role, I can help facilitate and be an all round help on set amid whatever role I'm in and foster a positive environment.
This project saw myself step into various roles but primarily I was the Artistic Director, overseeing every major creative choice for the overall project, ranging from the accompanying performance pieces to the implementation and installation of the project booth on the day of the Green Heart Fair.
'Finding Barrambin' was a collection of artwork installations created by QUT Visual Artists to be on display during Brisbane's Green Heart Fair; an homage to the reclamation of the land and title by the Yuggera-Turrbal people of Brisbane, Victoria Park back to Barrambin. The installation consisted of three major artworks, Historical Contours, Returning, and Always Has Been Always Will Be, as well as accompanying live performance pieces and short films.
Partnering with the Brisbane City Council, I was able to further oversee the booth that would be set up on the day of the fair and how we would be presented on the day of the fair alongside many other booths.
This role demanded that I oversaw a variety of different jobs and tasks that needed to be completed over the weeks leading to the fair itself. This management role was something that I ultimately found to be highly beneficial as I move forward into directing other projects and eventually my own creations.
